This is the tenth piece of reader art to be added to the Brightweavings
site. Anne Marie Broughton's portrait of Leyse appears below. You can look at Anne-Marie's
website for other pieces of her work or to inquire about commissions and prints of her
art.
Anne-Marie Broughton writes:
"I am a big fan of Guy Gavriel Kay (well obviously!) and I had just finished re-reading
The Fionavar Tapestry, which inspired me to draw my version of Leyse of the Swan
Mark. The story of Leyse has always stayed with me, since the first time I read The
Fionavar Tapestry (way back in High School!), I was moved by her unrequited love for
Lancelot and the parallels between her story and the Lady of Shalott. Since then I have
always been fascinated with elves and fantasy characters, this book trilogy was the first introduction
to the whole fantasy genre for me. When I think of elves, the images evoked in these novels
come to mind, of elves with eyes that change colour depending on their mood and so I wanted
to create an elf artwork with indigo eyes, which became my Leyse artwork. I wanted her to
have an ethereal beauty, an otherworldliness, but still have a vulnerability in the way she
looks out at you."
