March 2003
*****************
Hello all,
I haven't been ignoring you, I promise. No, you're right, there hasn't been a newsletter for quite some time, but then, there hasn't been an awful lot going on on Bright Weavings (every good thing deserves a lull occasionally), and nobody needs irrelevant emails in their inboxes these days, not with the amount of spam we already suffer from! And I've also been very busy over the past few months; those of you following the trials and tribulations of my career can now rest easy; somehow I seem to have acquired my dream job - I am now working fulltime as an editor for a publishing house that publishes fiction. Yes, finally, after so many years, I am being paid to read! In other news, I'm celebrating my 30th birthday this week, and who knows, the next newsletter may be written from a sealed room.... but enough of me, on to the matters at hand:
GGK News

> Beyond this Dark House
You should know this already, but in case you'd forgotten, a reminder - Beyond this Dark House, a book of poetry by GGK, will be shipping from the Penguin warehouse on March 28, so should be in Canadian bookshops by early April. For international readers, it can be ordered from www.amazon.ca or www.chapters.ca, or by phone from Book City if you want a signed copy. Details of that option can be found on the website at http://www.brightweavings.com/buyingbooks.htm. Having had the good fortune to see an advance copy, I can tell you all that you won't regret ordering a copy!
GGK's also going to be doing a reading tour after the book is published; He'll be reading at Hart House at the University of Toronto on April 15th, at White Dwarf Books in Vancouver on Tuesday April 22, at two libraries in Edmonton on the 23rd and then the 24th,(branches to be confirmed, details will appear on the site), and at McNally Robinson Books (Grant Park store) in Winnipeg on the afternoon of the 26th.
> Fionavar Jigsaw
The covers created by Janny Wurts and Don Maitz for the new trade editions of The Fionavar Tapestry are now available in jigsaw form! It's one big puzzle of a thousand pieces, incorporating all three covers into one picture (which is how it was originally painted). It's 16 x 34 (sorry, I don't know if that's cm or inches) and it's available from SunsOut puzzles for $14.50. To see a picture of it or order it, go to http://www.sunsout.com, click on 'Shop Online' and then on '2003 New Releases' and scroll down until you see 'Fionavar Tapestry.' And enjoy!
> Trade Mosaic
Penguin Canada will be releasing their trade paperback editions of Sailing to Sarantium and Lord of Emperors in April. This will bring the 'Mosaic' diptych in line with their other trade paperbacks. Cover design again by Cathy MacLean, they're revised versions of the existing covers for the two books. Versions of these will be on the site as soon as I get them. And in more Sarantine news, Harper Collins U.S. (EOS) have recently announced the 5th reprinting of Sailing to Sarantium.
What's New on Bright Weavings
**********************************************
> Weaving Legitimacy
There is a new paper for the student area of the scholarship section; Adrienne Johannson's Weaving Legitimacy: Kay's Use of Mythology in The Fionavar Tapestry. The essay concerns the idea that by using and adapting the mythology of our world for Fionavar, Kay was lending legitimacy to his own creation; especially to the idea that Fionavar was the 'first world'. It's a good read, and you can find it at:

> Answers on poetry from GGK
With the publication of Beyond this Dark House mere weeks away, GGK has answered a few questions for his readers, including why he chose now to publish some of his poetry, the difference he feels between writing novels and writing poetry, how writing novels has informed his poetry, which poets have influenced him the most....

In the Forums
**********************
As usual, talk in the forums has been interesting and varied. We had a brief foray into a group read of The Lions of Al-Rassan and intermittent discussion of many different ideas and issues has occurred, including favourite GGK novels, favourite books by other authors (what, you mean there are other authors?), magic and morality in Fionavar, real life mosaics from Byzantine times, the inevitable speculation on what the next book is going to be about... we've even had some limericks! If you want to start a discussion, just pop along to the forums and read through some threads, and see what interests you, and start talking! (http://www.brightweavings.com/forums/home.htm) There will be people there to respond, I promise you... and talking of limericks, we had an idea........
> Announcing a Limerick competition!
Since everyone seems to have so much fun making up limericks, we've decided to have a competition for best GGK related limerick. Competition will start as soon as I set up the new thread on the forums for it, and send out this email! Deadline March 31st, and we're going to have an outside judge to choose the winner. So, the rules are:
- Limerick has to be GGK book related
- Each entrant allowed two limericks
- No pseudonyms or double entry allowed, got to have real names on this one folks
- Winner gets a signed copy of Beyond this Dark House
Don't email me your limericks, go to the forums and post them so that everyone can enjoy them. The limerick contest thread is here:
http://www.brightweavings.com/scgi-bin/discus/show.cgi?2/142012
So start your own poetry skills bubbling and see if you can win a copy of the new book....
And that's all from me for now,
Till next time,
Deborah
