September 2002
************************
Hello all,
Well after months of being late with the newsletter (and teasing you mercilessly with the last couple with news of the new book) I'm back to being (almost) on time. We've barely hit October, and I'm sitting down to compose the September newsletter. Pretty good going! Must have something to do with the fact that I'm moved, and all settled into my new flat. And so without further ado, on to the real news. Only a small 'news' section in this edition of the newsletter, but then you did get a major announcement in the last one so I don't feel too bad. What I can tell you is there's a heck of a lot of great new additions to the site this month...
GGK News
*****************
GGK will be doing media interviews in Montreal and Quebec City the week of October 6th, in connection with the debut of the Alire edition of The Sarantine Mosaic and their relaunch of The Fionavar Tapestry. He'll also be in Montreal a month later for the Salon du Livre on November 16th and 17th, which may be of interest to the Francophones reading this.
What's New on Bright Weavings
**********************************************
> Map of Sarantium
For some reason, when The Sarantine Mosaic was published in Australia, the map was left out of the book. So, for the benefit of all those Australians who've never seen the map, I've added a copy to the site. Of course you're also allowed to peek at it if you're not Aussie....

> GGK and SFX
We have a new interview on the site, given by GGK to SFX, a UK SF magazine, and typed out and sent in to Bright Weavings by our very own Nic Clarke, who has recently become a reviewer for them. The interview is pretty much a GGK 101, covering the basic including how working on The Silmarillion crystallised GGK's desire to be a writer, and why he writes historical fantasy. Read it at:

> German Covers
The reasoning behind why Germany decided to split the Mosaic into 4 books may be mysterious (and dubious, in my opinion), but it does mean we get four covers to look at. The two covers for Lord of Emperors have been added to the site:

what the Polish think of The Tapestry and Tigana (cover of the Polish Summer Tree notwithstanding). Well thanks to Thomas Osypowicz, now you can find out. He's sent in translations of the Polish reviews we've linked to so you can find out what they're actually saying:

> The Summer Tree
Jes Perry is a singer/songwriter from Boston whose first full length cd of original music is due out this autumn. One of the tunes on the cd is entitled 'The Summer Tree' and is based on - you guessed it - some of the images and themes in The Summer Tree, together with references to ancient myths. Despite having a slot on mp3.com, Jes has very generously said that she'd like Bright Weavings to be the exclusive place on the web where you can hear this particular song. I for one am looking forward to the release of the album. To hear the song just click through to the music section:

> Beyond this Dark House
I don't know if that title gives you shivers, but I certainly feel them. In the last newsletter I gave you the news about the new book. Now to follow on from that, I've created a subsection in the Books section of the site for the new book. Very exciting. Usually the Books section acts as an index to link all the book-specific items site-wide together. For obvious reasons, we don't have much on the new book yet, but I've put that section in now in anticipation, and also to showcase the real new additions... I now have the text of the catalogue copy put out by Penguin Canada about the forthcoming book, together with an image of the book's cover, composed by the very talented Cathy MacLean:

In the Forums
**********************
Call me lazy, or call me eager to get the newsletter out on time. You choose. This month I'm not going to go through the forums to select detailed topics to engage your interest. I will tell you that current discussion has included the idea of legacies and what we want to leave behind us (as seen in The Sarantine Mosaic), whether anybody would be worthy of trying to translate a GGK book to the silver screen, and whether or not there was anything extraordinary about Stevan that would have prompted Brandin's extraordinary revenge. GGK has also answered a question on Dorothy Dunnett's work and why he finds her so inspiring, and another question on the quality of translations. And we've been discussing having a group read of A Song for Arbonne or The Lions of Al-Rassan but are waiting to see if anyone volunteers to lead the group read. And of course you don't have to join those discussions, you can begin your own, on any topic related to any of the books. Just click through to the forums and start talking - there's always something interesting going on...

And that's all from me for now,
Till next time,
