What was new in 2000

December 19: To mark the festive season, whichever festival you happen to be celebrating, Bright Weavings' resident artist Martin Springett has created a beautiful season's greetings card. Happy holidays to all our visitors!
December 17: Did you ever wonder what Convocation Hall looks like, where the five first see Loren and Matt, and the events of The Fionavar Tapestry are set in motion? Two GGK readers did, so they journeyed to Toronto to see it, together with the other Canadian landmarks mentioned in The Tapestry. They took photos, wrote a travel diary, and were kind enough to share it with us in Gateway to Fionavar: A Photographic Travelogue.
November 29: The scholarship section has been expanded! There are now 3 sections; the professional academic papers we already had have been augmented with the addition of a section of annotations and a student paper section:

  • 'The Annotated GGK' contains some reflections on literary and mythical connections in GGK's books by Sean Miller.
  • A paper by James Allard, '"The Unacknowledged Legislators of the World": Songs and Poetry in Guy Gavriel Kay's A Song for Arbonne' is our first undergraduate contribution. Read it here.
  • A paper by Stephen Wark, "Royal Ascent: the romance of monarchy in Yvain, The Hobbit, and Tigana" is our first graduate contribution. Read it here.
  • Meet the panel of academics who will jury submissions to the site.
November 22: Bright Weavings goes multimedia with a great addition to the site - a GGK themed Hotbar Skin Centre. Hotbar is a technology which allows you to download 'skins' - that 'dress' the grey Netscape/IE interface at the top of your browser with graphic images. A word of warning - they only work on PC's (sorry Mac users). So far I've created five skins to choose from, using cover art and quotes from the books. All you have to do to install the hotbar Active-X technology that makes this feature possible, is click 'yes' when the hotbar window pops up after you click through to the skin centre.
November 15: A chance for readers to help publishers! The paperback edition of Lord of Emperors is currently being prepared for printing. All editions were the same copy for the hardback, so if any of you spotted any typos or mistakes in whatever hardback copy you have, please send them in to me so that I can send them on to the publishers. Of course if any of you want to undertake a reread in order to catch problems, we won't complain! The deadline is December 1st. Thank you!!
November 12: I have just added to the site the text of a speech GGK gave recently at a conference in Canada entitled 'Reflections on an Ethical Society.' The speech is about personal privacy and fiction; how privacy extends to literature, and what happens to the boundaries of privacy in a society that seems to actively pursue and glorify the limelight.
November 8: We have a new interview on the site, given by GGK to the magazine Challenging Destiny. Plenty of interesting questions asked and answered!
November 7: GGK has answered some questions left in the forums...
October 30:Last call for any errata, typos etc in the Roc USA paperbacks of The Fionavar Tapestry. The new edition is going off to print in 48 hours, so if anyone has any mistakes they've found in those editions, please send them in to me asap.
October 22: The observant among you will have noticed that there is something major new today. In fact there's a veritable plethora of new features within two new sections for the site - hence two new buttons on the navigation bar - one for 'forums' and one for 'fun stuff.' I'm very pleased to announce that Bright Weavings is now fully interactive - after quite a few false starts, I have succeeded in adding forums (message boards) to the site, where you can go and meet fellow fans and discuss everything and anything to do with the worlds of GGK, what's on this site, and beyond (and perhaps a certain author might drop in occasionally too). Within the 'fun stuff' section, there's quite a few new pieces, as well as a proper home for some of the pieces on site already. Visit the new section to find out how to tell if you've been reading too much GGK, discover who one intrepid band of surfers decided would be perfect as characters in a film of The Fionavar Tapestry, and test your wits and knowledge with some quizzes on The Summer Tree - two levels, easy and hard.
October 12: I'm pleased to have a new essay by GGK for the site...not directly concerning his books, but discussing the ideas of historical accuracy and inaccuracy in contemporary entertainment - "The Problem with 'The Patriot'"
September 16: We have a new interview on the site - given by GGK to SFSite.com recently. Some of the topics discussed include GGK's use of journeys as metaphors, the importance of viewpoint characters, his meticulous historical research and why it's important, and how his different publishers market his books. Read it here.
August 29: A very fun addition to the site - Mabry Slemmons has been kind enough to agree to let us reproduce her essential travel piece: The Hitchhiker's Guide to Survival in Fionavar. Important information!
August 28: Would you like to help GGK with something? Check out the news section to see how you can...
August 20: We have a new review of Lord of Emperors on the site, written by Kate Nepveu. Read it here.
August 2: GGK has made some more comments on cover art, in the shape of his fab little Arthur pop-ups. I'm not going to tell you where they are - you'll have to find them yourselves! But at least you know they're in the art gallery!
August 1: I'm pleased to introduce the first piece of artwork inspired by GGK's books submitted by a reader to the site. Tim Fricker's 'Tapestry' is a detailed, loving representation of the characters and themes of The Fionavar Tapestry.
July 21: "What's new" on the site is obviously different from "news" from GGK world - and we have quite a lot of recent announcements you may want to see in the news section at the moment; new editions, new translations...but don't get overexcited - he hasn't had time to write a new book yet!
July 18: We have two new reviews on the site; a review of The Lions of Al-Rassan by Dave Langford, the well known SF critic and editor of Ansible, and a review of The Sarantine Mosaic 'Pieces of History' by Cheryl Morgan, editor of the ezine Emerald City. Click on the title of the book to get to the review.
July 18: A fascinating academic paper has been added to the site. "Shifting Focalization and the Strategy of Delay: The Narrative Weaving of The Fionavar Tapestry," by Neil Randall, was first published in the journal 'Canadian Literature.' A huge thanks goes to Caitlin Sweet for locating the journal and typing up the paper! Read it here.
June 28: Another interview has been added to the site. This one was given in '95, but it's very detailed, so it's well worth a peruse. Plus, this one's also special - it was originally done for Solaris, a French language magazine, so the interview is available in both French and English on the site. Click here to get to either option.
June 27: We have a new interview on the site - a special one - this one is in audio! The interview is with CBC Canada's weekend morning show. So to hear about the themes and ideas of The Sarantine Mosaic from GGK himself, click here.
